Getting married in the south of France: budget, travel and accommodation well arranged

By Pascale OzilUpdated August 10, 20268 min reading time

In short

A wedding in the south of France becomes clear when you first determine the number of guests, the overnight stays and the division of tasks. For many Dutch and Belgian couples, a civil wedding in their own country, followed by a personal ceremony in France, is the simplest arrangement.

The photos usually come first: olive trees, a long table, warm evening light. The budget starts somewhere else. Who sleeps where? How many days will the group stay? What does the domain arrange and what do you book yourself?

Le Mas d'Eylieux rents out the domain and the gites under its own management. There is no package with catering, breakfast, decoration or wedding planning. That gives you freedom, but it also requires you to make clear choices in advance.

01

Start with the size, not the decoration

First write down three numbers: the number of people who will stay for the entire period, the number of people who will stay for one night and the number of possible day guests. These numbers determine the distribution of the gites, the meals, the transport and the spaces you actually need.

Also decide whether you will celebrate one day or make it a wedding weekend. Two or three nights provide more peace and quiet upon arrival, ceremony and departure. One extra night can make more of a difference logistically than an extra decoration post.

  • Who should be able to sleep on the property?
  • Which guests need their own room or quiet gîte?
  • Are you organizing a joint dinner, brunch or both?
  • What is the agreed alternative in case of rain?
02

The budget in six clear items

Do not compare a single room price with a domain where your loved ones also sleep. Calculate the same full period per option. Include the location as well as overnight stays, travel and suppliers.

Ask each supplier for a separate quote. This keeps track of where your budget is going and allows you to adjust one post without redesigning the entire weekend. For full rental of Le Mas d'Eylieux, you will find a reference table with four seasonal categories on the privatization page. Pascale confirms the applicable price, length of stay and conditions in the quotation.

  • Domain and overnight stays: dates, number of nights, assigned gites and included spaces.
  • Food and drinks: caterer, service, materials, breakfast or brunch and any travel costs.
  • Ceremony and decoration: flowers, chairs, lighting, printing and rental materials.
  • Image and music: photographer, videographer, musicians or DJ, including travel and accommodation.
  • Guest travel: cars, carpooling, overnight stay and local trips.
  • Margin: leave room for a weather alternative and minor changes in the last few weeks.

Where the budget usually changes

The season and the number of nights directly influence the rent. Suppliers traveling from the Netherlands or Belgium may charge additional travel and accommodation costs. Local suppliers limit these costs, but sometimes require more coordination if you do not live nearby.

Organizing yourself is not automatically cheaper. It works especially well when someone is responsible for planning, receiving and cleaning up. If you don't want to think about anything on the wedding day, include an independent coordinator in the budget. That service is not provided by the Mas.

04

Traveling from the Netherlands and Belgium

For a group with different households, the car is usually easiest. Agree per vehicle who will arrive and when and share one document with address, contact number, arrival window and shopping plan. This prevents everyone from asking Pascale the same practical question individually.

Plan sufficient breaks or an overnight stay for older guests and families with young children. Don't let anyone take a long drive on the wedding day itself. The latest route information and parking agreements belong in the guest letter, not just in the group chat.

05

Civil or symbolic marriage in France

Dutch people cannot simply get married civilly in France. According to NederlandWorldwide, one of the partners or one of their parents must live in France for at least one month. For many couples, a civil wedding in the Netherlands and a symbolic ceremony on the estate is therefore the practical choice.

For Belgians, the French Mairie also determines which documents and conditions are required. The Belgian government recommends contacting the municipality where the marriage would take place in advance. Always check your personal situation with your own municipality and the competent French mairie.

06

What should be included in the quotation?

A good quotation prevents assumptions. Have the dates, number of nights, assigned gites, sleeping places and rooms used explicitly included. Also ask about arrival, departure, cleaning, deposit, cancellation, parking, swimming pool and contractual agreements about music.

The Mas does not include catering, breakfast, decoration, entertainment and event coordination. You rent the place yourself and book the other professionals directly.

07

When is Le Mas d'Eylieux suitable for your wedding?

The Mas is suitable for couples who want to spend several days together with a small group, like to choose their own suppliers and are not looking for a standard party room. The six gites give different households privacy, while the domain can be used exclusively according to the agreements in the contract.

If you are looking for a large indoor hall, an all-in package or complete organization by the location, then another wedding location is probably more suitable. That clarity is more useful than a viewing that could never fit your plans.

For you to decide

Frequently asked questions

Are bed linen and towels included?

Bed linen and towels are optional: €15 per person per stay, for one gîte or the entire domain.

Are toilets and showers shared?

Each self-contained gite has its own private toilet and shower. There are no communal sanitary facilities.

Where can we eat together when it rains?

Eat in your gîte or organize meals in the courtyard or on the property, according to the agreements with Pascale. In the event of rain, Côté Jardin can accommodate a meal for up to 30 people. This number of dining places does not change the 25 sleeping places; discuss the reception conditions with Pascale. Any marquees must be arranged for your plans; they are not automatically included.

Can Dutch and Belgians legally get married on the domain?

Not automatically. The conditions depend on place of residence, nationality and the French Mairie. Many couples arrange the civil wedding in their country of residence and then hold a symbolic ceremony in France.

How many guests can stay at the Mas?

The six gites offer exactly 25 sleeping places in total. The layout for your guests will be confirmed before booking and included in the quotation.

Is catering or wedding planning included?

No. The Mas rents out the domain and the agreed gîtes under its own management. You choose and book your own caterer, photographer, decoration and possible coordinator. With full privatization you also choose your own music and DJ.

Can we bring our own suppliers?

Yes, as long as the practical and contractual conditions have been agreed in advance with the Mas. Always ask suppliers whether travel, accommodation and construction are included in their quotation.

Can we choose our own music and DJ?

When the entire domain is rented exclusively, you can choose your own music and DJ. Le Mas does not set an end time for music or the event. Visitors who are not staying overnight on site must leave no later than midnight. Le Mas does not provide a DJ, music service, music subscription or sound equipment. Music must comply with the rental agreement, the house rules, respect for the neighbors and the noise obligations. The organizer will check and arrange at its own expense any required declarations, permissions and payments of duties, including with SACEM where applicable.
