Canoeing with children in Ardèche: choose the route before booking

The age displayed on a course is the start of the discussion. Add the comfort in the water, the child's desire, the total duration and the experience of the adults. A shorter outing leaves room for fatigue; she still asks you to follow the professional's instructions.
Age and swimming: what the rules require
Thenavigation order of 19 August 2025 requires knowing how to swim, wearing a suitable vest and closed shoes. It requires certified supervision for children less than seven years old. Those of seven to less than twelve years old must be accompanied by an adult or supervised by a holder of appropriate certification.
The tourist office details outings with children. The rental company also specifies its own conditions: some ask to know how to swim 25 meters and immerse themselves, as indicated for example CCC Canoeing on the Chassezac. This does not mean that an identical test is organized by all rental companies.
Give the exact age and level of each person to the professional before paying. Ask for a supervised outing if the adults lack experience; do not register a child based on a simple photo of a calm river.
A mini-descent or a day in the gorges?
A formula around Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Chames can pass under the arch without crossing the entire reserve. Thetourist office presents a route of 8 km. Check the exact departure, briefing, passages and total duration with shuttle.
A crossing of 24 km involves a longer day. Flow, heat and breaks modify the effort. Don’t choose it just because the child is of the minimum age; discuss the group’s endurance and assistance options with the rental company. Our descent guide compares formats.
If someone doesn't want to paddle, plan another day: the Pont d’Arc from the shore, a visit or a walk. A bathing must also be chosen according to site information and monitoring.
Also prepare the briefing and return
Have the child's place in the boat specified and instructions in the event of capsizing. Follow the rental company's demonstration rather than generic advice on what position to take in a rapid.
Take water, sun protection, hat, closed shoes and belongings in the container provided. Save something to drink and eat while waiting for the shuttle. The weather and river levels are checked before departure; swimming rules and equipment are reminded by the prefecture.
On your return, leave the rest of the day free
Since the Mas, count a journey to the boarding point, then the briefing: the time indicated on the reservation is not the time at which to leave the accommodation. Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is approximately 35–40 minutes away depending on traffic and arrival point.
A lunch at the lodge and a break may be enough for the rest. For other days, find family activities. Indicate your family's needs to Pascale to prepare accommodation; the Mas does not reserve the canoe for you.

Practical questions
Can a child under seven years old go downhill?
The current decree requires supervision by a holder of appropriate certification. The professional confirms the swimming conditions, age, course and support for his outing. Do not book a free rental for a child under seven years old.
Is the 24 km canoe suitable for ages seven and up?
The minimum age is not enough. A long crossing requires discussing endurance, comfort in the water, weather and assistance possibilities with the professional. Children aged seven to under twelve must be accompanied by an adult or certified supervisor.
