Going down the Ardèche by canoe: comparing the routes and their organization

“A descent of the Ardèche” can designate a short outing under the Pont d’Arc or a crossing of the reserve over two days. Before comparing prices, ask for the route map, start, finish and total time. These are the details that decide your day.
Three formats, different commitments
| Format to study | What to clarify with the rental company |
|---|---|
| Mini-descent around the Pont d’Arc, often 6 to 8 km | Passage under the arch, paddle time, briefing and shuttle; short routes do not cross the entire reserve. |
| Crossing the reserve, around 24 km depending on departure | Full day to prepare: endurance, water, breaks, passages and return times. |
| Descent over two days, around 30–32 km depending on the route | Reservation of the night in Gaud or Gournier, sleeping equipment, meals and logistics for the next day. |
Distances and times vary depending on bases, flow and breaks. The same commercial title may cover different embarkation points. Compare offers based on these details.
A mini-descent can be a first option for a family, after discussion on the level. Our guide with children prepares the choice. For two days, find the bivouacs of Gaud and Gournier.
The river cannot be judged by the chosen niche
An early start can limit some of the heat. It does not guarantee calm water or easy rapids. The flow rate, water releases, upstream rainfall and restrictions are checked with the professional before launching.
Thecurrent order requires knowing how to swim, a suitable life jacket and closed shoes. Supervision is specific for children under seven years old; children aged seven to under twelve must be accompanied by an adult or certified supervisor. The rental company's additional conditions, including swimming skills, must be confirmed before booking.
Listen to the briefing on passages and what to do in the event of a capsize. Keep the requested equipment while sailing. The reserve rules require in particular to collect the waste, to preserve tranquility and not to make fires. A “campfire at the bivouac” is therefore not an authorized activity.
The price must include a legible organization
Ask what is provided: vest, paddles, cans, return transport, possible supervision. For two days, check the bivouac ticket and overnight equipment separately. Check the current prices for chosen professional ; an old average price is not worth a quote.
Specify the appointment, parking of the car and the last return. The shuttle is added to the paddle: arriving at the disembarkation is not yet having returned to the lodge. Water, meals, sun protection and a waterproof bag are prepared for this entire duration.
In the event of a storm, high heat or closure, follow the professional's instructions and check their cancellation terms. You can choose other family activities during the stay.
Prepare for departure from your gîte
Saint-Montan is a possible base for a stay around Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, approximately 35–40 minutes depending on the meeting point and traffic. Add to the journey the advance requested by the base.
For your summer holidays in South Ardèche, keep the evening free after a long outing. Accommodation and canoeing are booked separately; the Mas does not provide activity packages.

Practical questions
Do you need to know how to swim to canoe on the Ardèche?
Yes. The current navigation order requires you to know how to swim, to wear a suitable life jacket and closed shoes. Rental companies specify their additional conditions, supervision and expected skills before booking.
Is the return included in a descent?
Check it in the rental company’s offer. Ask for drop-off location, shuttle times, car parking and equipment included. This return time is added to navigation.
