Where to swim in South Ardèche: choose a controlled beach rather than a secret spot

To choose a swim, the name of a pretty river is not enough. Look at the exact beach, access, surveillance and water information. A “secret spot” found online may lack signage, have a difficult-to-see current, or cross private land.
On the Ardèche, compare the developed beaches
The Pont d’Arc upstream, Balazuc and Salavas appear in the surveillance calendar 2026 of the community of municipalities. It covered 2 July to 30 August, from 12:30 to 18:30. Outside of these dates and times, do not count on rescuers.
To Vogue, Sauze or at Grain de Sel in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, consult the files of the water quality portal and on-site display. None of these locations guarantee that you will be on foot for long or that the current will be low. To prepare for the trip to Pont d’Arc, find parking, shuttle and swimming.
For families, proximity to the village, toilets and easy access are more important than a promise of turquoise water. The family activities guide also gives ideas when swimming is not suitable.
Chassezac and Ibie require their own preparation
The official portal lists Chaulet and Mazet, in Berrias-et-Casteljau, among the controlled beaches of Chassezac. Prepare a route to the chosen beach: access to them is not just a quarter of an hour from the Mas. Parking fees and access rules are checked locally.
For Ibie or undeveloped access, ask local organizations for conditions before leaving. The absence of recent information does not mean that a site is suitable for children. Don’t rely on supposed water temperatures or a photo taken another year.
You can associate an output with a village of character without multiplying the kilometers. The canoe in the gorges remains a separate reservation with its conditions of participation.
Checks that come before the desire to enter the water
Check the weather, prohibition signs and water quality. The portal is off season in October 6 2026, with ranges displayed without analysis available: you must consult it again for your dates.
Choose an area that is supervised during its opening hours; keep children under close supervision. Do not jump from bridges or cliffs or dive into unknown depths. A rise in water levels or a storm requires changing the program. The rules for swimming in gorges complete these benchmarks.
Return to the Mas without planning a second obligatory swim
The Mas swimming pool can complete the stay when it is open, from mid-May to September depending on the weather. It is unsupervised, shared in partial rental and exclusive in complete privatization. Returning to the lodge can also mean preparing the meal and not moving all day.

Practical questions
Are all swimming areas in South Ardèche free and accessible?
No, you shouldn't assume that. Access rules, closures and parking fees are verified for the chosen beach. The 2026 calendar of the community of municipalities indicated free access to its three supervised beaches, which does not generalize free access to all sites.
Which beach to choose with children?
Choose a beach that is supervised during its opening hours, with access adapted to your group. The children remain under close supervision. No river guarantees a gradual bottom, shallow depth or permanent weak current.
