Villages in Southern Ardèche: choose between Saint-Montan, Balazuc and their neighbors

Balazuc and Vogüé look at each other from the river; Saint-Montan can be seen in the slope of its calades; Alba-la-Romaine adds an ancient site to the walk in the village. Choosing between these outings starts with what you want to see, and the route from your accommodation.
From Saint-Montan, destinations to the west are not all just a few minutes away. Watch the full journey before promising five villages in the same day. One or two stops with lunch already take up a real place in the stay.
Five villages, according to desire and walking
| Village | Main interest | Action to be expected | Interior visit to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint-Montan | Restored village and castle, in the commune of Mas | Slopes, slopes and stairs | Conditions of entry to the castle |
| Balazuc | Village above the Ardèche | Narrow streets, ramps and stairs | Ardèche Museum, with its own ticket |
| Vogue | Village and castle on the banks of the Ardèche | Route between parking lot, streets and castle to prepare | Visit to the castle and exhibitions |
| Labeaume | Village, Beaume and cliffs | Access to viewpoints and gardens to request | Openings and routes to be confirmed with the office |
| Alba-la-Romaine | Village and ancient heritage | Distinguish the village from the archaeological site | MuséAl: access and practical information |
Saint-Montan allows you to stay in the town; Balazuc, Vogüé and Labeaume request an exit to the west. Alba constitutes another heritage day. For each, check the route from Eylieux and the actual walk: this table does not guarantee an accessible route.
Balazuc and Vogüé, along the Ardèche
Balazuc clings to the cliff above the river. The streets are sloping, with narrow passages and stairs. The village belongs to the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The view from the other bank and the walk in the village are two distinct moments: plan parking and authorized access.
Vogüé can be visited around the castle and houses on the banks of the Ardèche. An entrance to the castle, depending on the openings and exhibitions, extends the exit beyond a walk in the streets. Check the program on the official sites before booking the two villages on the same day.
Labeaume and Alba, two other directions
Labeaume is located near the Beaume River, at the foot of the cliffs. The bridge, the streets and the hanging gardens provide several subjects for the visit. Access to the gardens cannot be deduced from a photo; inquire at the tourist office. If you are planning a swim, check the conditions and prohibitions for the day separately from the visit.
In Alba-la-Romaine, the dark and light stones of the facades accompany the walk in the village. The archaeological site and the MuséAl museum allow you to devote more time to ancient history. Their hours are not those of the village streets.
Saint-Montan, near the Mas
The castle visible on the cover is that of Saint-Montan. The Friends of Saint-Montan carried out the restoration of the old town from the years 1970. The streets can be explored on foot; the climb and the calades require good shoes. Consult the castle's specific conditions for the planned date.
The village is in the commune where the Mas is located. The hamlet of Eylieux and the old town remain two distinct places: do not assume a journey of a few minutes on foot without checking the route.
Organize outings from a single gîte
A village visit can occupy the morning, then leave the rest of the day at the estate. A canoe descent deserves its own day or half-day depending on the option chosen: adding it between two villages requires checking the rental company's schedules.
For summer vacation, go cool and keep a margin for parking. Our lodges allow you to return to the same accommodation. The choice of outings can remain open until the day before, depending on the weather and the desire to walk.
