Bourg-Saint-Andéol: the bishops’ palace, Mithras and the market

Bourg-Saint-Andéol is close to Saint-Montan: allow around ten minutes by car from Eylieux, excluding traffic. You can do your shopping there and leave. But a morning left in the city allows you to see the bishops' palace, then to reach the Tourne valley on foot.
For a Wednesday visit, start with the market. Fresh purchases will wait better in the gîte's refrigerator than spending an afternoon in the trunk.
The palace on the banks of the Rhône
The bishops' palace was a residence of the bishops of Viviers. Its facade looks out over the Rhône; Inside, the route allows you to discover old rooms and decorations. The monument is private and its openings change with the season: consult the palace site for the chosen visit, the times and the price, before you travel.
The lower town and the streets behind the quays can be explored on foot. To extend this theme of episcopal history, Viviers is another nearby outing, to keep for a second half-day.
Mithras and the springs of the Tourne valley
The ancient bas-relief of Mithras is carved into the rock. It represents the god sacrificing a bull. Look for it in the valley of Tourne, rather than on the facade of a monument in the center: this is where the springs of the valley are also located.
A walk in this area completes your visit to the palace. The shade and the water change the atmosphere of the outing, but the springs are not a swimming beach. For hot days, our guide cool outings also offers underground tours.
Wednesday, market place
The tourist office calendar for 2026 indicates the Wednesday morning market, from 8:00 to 12:00, Place du Champ de Mars or on the quays depending on the season. The location must therefore be verified; the old announcement from the town hall on the quays concerned the summer 2025.
Vegetables, fruits and lunch items can be enough to fill a basket. The calendar of neighboring markets allows you to choose another morning if your stay does not include a Wednesday.
Wine lovers can also look at the estates of Côtes du Vivarais. A tasting is prepared with the cellar, and with a conductor who does not taste.
Return to Saint-Montan
The market and a visit already take up a good place in the day. On your return, you can have lunch at the Mas, then discover the old town of Saint-Montan at another time.
Our lodges are in the hamlet of Eylieux. The journey between the lodge and transport must be organized if you come without a car ; serving a town does not mean that a bus arrives at the estate. To prepare your dates and travel, contact Pascale.
