A rainy day in Ardèche: a cave, a museum or simply the gîte

If rain is coming, start by looking at its nature: a downpour does not require the same decision as a heavy rain alert. The Météo-France forecasts for Saint-Montan and the vigilance go before the ticket already reserved. A sheltered activity is not necessarily accessible by a safe route during an intense episode.
Choose only one covered tour
Saint-Marcel can be visited with a guide. The site announces 14 °C and 416 steps in total. Look practical information before booking; OUR Saint-Marcel guide details what to prepare.
Orgnac brings together a natural cave and the City of Prehistory. The underground route goes down 700 steps and back up by elevator, to 12 °C. Consult the ticket and times to decide whether your group visits the cave, the museum, or both.
Chauvet 2 offers replica paintings, the Aurignacian Gallery and exhibitions. The guided tour lasts approximately one hour; the whole thing takes more than half a day. The Chauvet guide 2 distinguishes the guided time slot from the time to be expected on site.
These sites can be in high demand when the weather changes. Check available places, steps and travel time. The comparison of caves helps you choose an outing rather than accumulating them.
Also adapt shorter outings
A visit to Viviers or Bourg-Saint-Andéol depends on locations open that day. Don’t go assuming that a cathedral, museum or castle will be accessible. The calades of Saint-Montan can be slippery.
For a tasting, consult the sector producers and confirm the welcome directly. A detour through the market then a meal at the lodge can also be enough. Our flavor book gives ideas for the table.
In canoe, the professional confirms whether navigation is possible. Rain upstream can change the river even if it appears weak when you start. For the lookouts, check visibility, circulation and access security.
Staying at the Mas is also part of the stay
Each Mas gîte has its own kitchen and bathroom. A meal prepared together, a book or a game around the table can replace the outing. This avoids a long drive to visit a place chosen only because it is open.
If you are planning a stay outside summer, request information about your accommodation and consult the Stay FAQ. Comfort on site also counts when the program changes.

Practical questions
Do the caves stay open when it rains?
Ordinary rain may be compatible with an organized visit, but opening and access are not guaranteed in all weathers. Check the site information and weather alerts before traveling.
What to plan with children on a rainy day?
A single covered visit, adapted to the steps and their attention, then a return to the gîte. The Chauvet 2 replica requires about an hour with the guide and half a day for the site; natural caves have stairs.
